I am finally reading this and it is really great. For some reason I always thought it would be hokey or overly sentimental but it's actually very charming.
I first read this as a child and I still think they are quite good. They are interesting, often funny, and as you say, not overly sentimental. I recommend the other books he wrote as well: All Things Wise & Wonderful, All Things Bright & Beautiful, etc.
I fell in love with Herriot's book years ago - I think is was the calmness that pervades his writing. I just finished reading a fun 'sheep' book "Three Bags Full - a Sheep Detective Story" - where the poor shepherd is found dead in his pasture and his sheep decide to solve the crime.
I've been reading James Herriot since I was about 10 or so, and have loved every minute. I even harbor a desire to live in Yorkshire (or at least visit in the summer :) ). Please enjoy!
(as an unrelated side note, part of my verification code is "weft")
I just finished the first book and I am diving right into his next volume. They are just lovely, gentle stories and just what I need to be reading in such a stressful time. I read Three Bags Full too! It's wonderful- although it's fiction, it really made me think about my sheep (and the way they process information) in a completely new way. If you have any more recommendations I'd love to hear from all of you. I hate running out books and I have to plan ahead, living on an island and all.
I read this in the back seat of our car on a trip from Houston to Corpus many years ago. It was dark and I was using a flashlight. My whole family thought I was wacko because I laughed myself almost sick. It's one of the best books I've ever read . . . and Herriot doesn't dissappoint with his other books either. Happy reading!
