FAQs. Well at least AQs.

I get lots and lots of questions via email and in the comments on blog posting so I thought I would answer some of them today.

Why do the lambs have long tails and the adult sheep have short tails?
It will come as no surprise to long-time readers of the blog that this question came from the ever-observant Sedress. Most sheep farmers dock their lambs tails much the same way that some breeds of dogs tails are docked. We purchased most of our sheep after their tails had been docked. We have chosen not to dock our lambs tails for a couple of reasons.
When we purchased Lincoln as a day-old bottle baby we really weren't looking to buy a lamb. We were at a friends farm to pick up an angora goat bottle baby and Lincoln was in the same playpen looking cute, so we took him too. His tail had already been docked, and I don't know if it had been cut to short or what, but it got terribly infected and was sort of always covered with poop. He survived and is fine, but it was a pretty harrowing experience. So there's that.
We also lamb much later than most farms in the Northeast. By the time our lambs are born the flies have already hatched. Any open wounds, which is what is left when a tail is docked, is vulnerable to fly strike. Now, some shepherds will tell you that long tails can lead to a build up of manure which can also lead to fly strike. And that's true. But an open would is about a million times more likely to be a target. We keep a close eye on the lambs backsides so that manure doesn't have a chance to build up and it has never ever happened.
On balance, I think our approach is the right one for us.

What deciding factors go into choosing a mill for your fiber?
This one is from Jen at The Sachem Farmhouse, a B&B I would like to visit someday.

Choosing a mill is so difficult! Basically, I am looking for a mill with a reputation for doing good work that can handle the kind of volume we have AND offer customer service that isn't terrible. It doesn't have to be great customer service, just a step above appalling is fine. The quality of the end product matters to me infinitely more.
By the time we send fiber to the mill we have invested tens of thousands of dollars in growing it, not to mention thousands of hours. Turning it over to someone else is a huge leap of faith. I have heard horror stories about fleeces being destroyed by processing, or shorted (not all the fiber given to the mill is returned). In one case that I know of a mill went into bankruptcy while they had hundreds of a friend's fleeces. She actually had to pay to have her fleeces shipped back to her in the exact same state she had shipped them in!
I can't wait to get the Spring 08 fiber back from the new mill that we are using. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be the beginning of a long and mutually beneficial relationship.

What kind of dogs do you have and what do they do?
This is probably the question I get asked the most. Our dogs are an Italian breed called Maremma. They are a livestock guardian breed- they do not herd, although Cini thinks he can sometimes.
All three of our dogs were born on working sheep farms and instinctively understand that guarding the flock is their job. There is very little training involved with them as far as guarding goes, but all dogs go through their annoying teen years when they have an excess of energy and are super-playful. This requires a bit of reminding that they are not allowed to chase, chew on, harass or otherwise vex the sheep and goats.
We have three Maremma:
Biscotti, (or Biscuit) is our oldest dog. She was six weeks old when she came to live on our farm.
Biscotti at three months old. I HATE this picture of me, but B looks so darn cute I'm posting it anyway.

This was taken last week.

I love this picture of B with her puppies.

She is very lighthearted and playful. She weighs about 70 pounds give or take and is on the small side for the breed.

Fettucini is our male. He is a constant worrier and is never off-duty. Cini eyes farm visitors warily, although he usually wags his tail at the same time. He weighs about 110 pounds.

Cini as a puppy with Logan, Patrick's younger son.

Cini giving Buster and Cosmo some love.

Harry and Logan think this picture of Cini is the funniest thing ever.

Sabine is Biscotti and Fettucini's pup. It's too early to know what kind of guard Sabine will be but she and Cini are best best friends.

We had one litter of three puppies before having Biscuit spayed. The puppies were born in a whelping box lined with sheep fleece so they would be aware of the sheep even before their eyes and ears opened.  Having puppies was awesome and I totally understand how it can be kind of addictive. Having said that though, I am really concerned about pet overpopulation.

Although this breed is very affectionate and loving they are not house pets. I think I should repeat that. These dogs make terrible house pets! They are working dogs and are very uncomfortable anytime they are away from their flock. Believe it or not, although this breed has only been in the U.S. for around 20 years, there are Maremma rescues. I recently heard of a rescue receiving a Maremma from a family that bought it as a puppy in a pet store in the mall.

What kind of camera do you use?
I have a mad crush on my camera, a Nikon D40. It is hands down the best camera I've ever owned. It's super-intuitive, lighting fast (which really matters when you are taking pictures of animals that are forever moving) and an affordable (around $450) introduction to a digital SLR.
I have two lens. I bought my camera body in a kit with the 18-55 lens. It's fine if you can get up close to your subject but there are times when I want the capture the animals without their reacting to what I'm doing. For those times I use my 55-200 lens. You can purchase one lens that goes from 18-200 but it is absurdly expensive. It would be nice not to have to change lens all the time, but not $1000 nice.
The D40 takes great photos. Of course, I am now coveting the D80 or even the D300

Do you use Photoshop on your photos?
No. I am considering getting Photoshop Elements, a truncated version of the full program that should be able to do everything I could need it to. For me, it's really a time issue, cause I have know idea when I am going to learn how to use it.

Is your fiber organic?
Nope. Unfortunately one of the realities of raising Angora goats is that they get lice. Not the kind of lice that runs rampant in elementary schools. It's a species specific parasite that doesn't even affect the sheep. Left untreated, the lice will drive the poor animals crazy with the itching. When the goats scratch at it with their horns and hooves their fleeces are ruined.
We use a nasty petroleum-based chemical to treat the lice, which is why the goats look so dirty as their fleeces grow in. Patrick is really wary of using toxic chemicals and dons a plastic bubble before we delouse. I am much more casual about the whole thing and Patrick assures me that I am going to pay for my nonchalance with liver cancer 30 years from now.
We have just started experimenting with a new herbal dewormer that we hope will help with the lice problem as well. If it works by smelling god-awful it should be mighty effective.

I will be choosing the winners at random on Tuesday, June 24 at 7 p.m. Check back here to find out if you won. You don't have to be a shareholder to win.

If you are not a shareholder and would like to receive notification when I put up a new blog post of giveaway shoot me an email at susangibbs1 at mac dot com. Hi there. My name's Kathy; Yarndork on Ravelry. I had to laugh at the question, what's on your needles? Which ones? I have so many wip's I may forget a few. Let's see...I have a sock in Lorna's Laces DK that's almost done, I'm about 10 or so rows away from finishing. There's an alpaca shawl/wrap that I've been working off and on for a couple of years now. I'm about to cast on another sock, for the Summer of Socks and possibly to enter in my fair. I have a sweater in the Stargazer pattern in some lovely angora that my sister in law got me for Christmas. Don't tell hubby, but that cashmere he got me for Mother's Day is already cast on for another sweater/top. I have a hat to go in the box for give-away at my church; that's my Sunday knitting. If you count crochet too, I have a Tampa Bay Buccaneer blanket that I'm making for hubby also "on the hook". And a crocheted potholder also. That's all I can think of for now. Hope that qualifies me for the contest!

This is soo much fun. I have read your blog and the picture of Ike's ears flying up and down made me smile. If life wasn't so busy I'm sure it would be peaceful.
I am currently knitting a ribbed jacket in one peice in a beautiful teal yarn for my sister's little one. My husband insists I knit something for myself but knitting for others is just lovely.
As I have the final sleeve on the needles my next project is going to be little upturned socks and a matching beanie. Also contemplating leg warmers as Harry has just started crawling. These are perfect for winter. We are just coming out of drought in Australia and to see the lushness of your fields is refreshing. I'm sure the sheep in the photos are smiling.
Take care Bronwyn.

Lovely pictures you had.

I'm so glad you post notices about these things on Ravelry, because then I remember to go look here at the beautiful photos of your adorable animals! They all just look so happy. Have you ever used your dog's fur in yarn? At first I thought that was a strange concept, but then I realized that it's not that different from any other animal hair yarn.

I have a baby outfit, a simple diagonal blanket, and a Ravenclaw scarf for my friend on my needles right now. They are all primarily detestable acrylic yarns, unfortunately. I really need to transition to all-natural fibers.

I have the Yarn Harlot's Snowdrop Shawl in red Malabrigo laceweight, a Debbie Bliss alphabet baby blanket out of cream and green soy yarn for my dear friend, a pair of blue bamboo socks for my husband, a pair of socks made of Lucy Neatby Celestial Merino for my best friend, a black and orange acrylic sweater to wear to my school's homecoming football game, and a cappuccino silk/mohair/cashmere shawl that I've been working on forever.

On my needles? Cherie Amour, about to be frogged (measurement issues I've worked out in my head now, soon to be fixed), log cabin blanket in maple tree colored wool, two socks in Wool of the Andes, and the start of another log cabin giveaway blanket.

Wow, is that it?? This is Sarah, aka knitcrazybooknut on ravelry and librarything and gmail.

On every drive through the English countryside this spring my 3 year old would say (in a high pitched squeaky voice)"Aahhh! Look at the little lambs!" He'd have a blast at your place, though he'd be hiding behind me if your gorgeous dogs tried to kiss him. We did get a chance for him to feed a lamb with a bottle later on and he was just ecstatic!

Anyway, to enter your giveaway... on my needles are: a summer top of my own design, a pair of 2/2/2 cable socks, and on my hook is Robyn Chachula's "Comfy Cardi". Can't just be doing one thing at a time!

And all the while scanning ravelry to see what'll be next after that.

Thanks for having these giveaways; I don't think I'd've found you otherwise (I'm on the west coast and am not an Etsy frequenter). I'm learning so much from your posts! Every spring we have a few flocks of sheep come out to pastures near the freeways and main street here in my hometown, and I've always wondered just what it takes to raise them. Your dogs are ever so cute too. What great guardians.

I've got several projects on the needles right now--Veronik Avery's Lace Ribbon Scarf, Cat Bordhi's Columbine Peaks socks, the second Fetching mitt, Jenna Wilson's Eris cardigan, and an afghan. You'd think I'd be going slightly mad, but really, it makes for sane variety. :-D

Hi, I just found your blog through Ravelry. Great photos of your animals! I use a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and have had a heck of a time trying to get really good photos of my mom's small herd of sheep (Barbados). They don't want to stay still and they're VERY suspicious of my intentions.

On my needles right now -- well, until recently I was really bad about starting a whole bunch of different projects so I'd have 20 WIPs all going at once. I'm trying to change that so that I actually finish one thing, maybe two . . . no more than three at a time.

I'm working on opposite ends of the spectrum right now: I have a Berroco Vibe bag on Size 17 needles an a pair of Tofutsies socks on Size 1 needles! I find I really prefer the feel of the smaller needles. I use the two circs method for knitting socks, and these are my very first pair of toe-ups. I'm going to be learning how to do a short-row heel.

Thanks again for the link; I'll be putting your blog on my list to read on a regular basis!

I have some fun things on my needles right now. One is a Debbie Bliss baby cardigan with wonderful little roses. It will have a lot of ends to weave in with three colors for each flower, but it's beatutiful. The other project is a lace afghan. I'm taking a lace class and we're making two blocks of each of 10 lace patterns. The two blocks of each pattern will be one in a light color yarn and one in a dark color yarn to show contrast. I just started, but it should be very cool.

Second, about five inches of a sweater (in Skipper) for myself. I've had the yarn forever and had plans for this sweater from the start, but I'm just now getting around to actually knitting it.

Soon, I'm going to have a teddy bear for a coworker and the Glowing Toes socks for my LYS sock of the month club.

Saw your post on Ravelry (Needlework on the Net) and came to your blog just to look and see what it was. I've been reading and looking and checking the links and Ravelry group for over an hour now. What a positively wonderful idea a CSA is!!! I wonder if there are any near me? Doubt it because I don't think woolbearing animals like our southern heat, but I will have to look into that. I'm definitely interested in learning more about this .. . . so thanks for posting that thread about this giveaway.

I have to tell you that I really LOVE the pictures of all the animals and the farm. How great would it be to know exactly where my yarn came from - down to the face of the sheep/goat. Your photography is wonderful. I've bookmarked your blog so I can check back often.
teresaknits (on Ravelry)

On my needles now:
Felted fish for gifts for kids
A sweater that my youngest is designing for herself
A bear that has become a cat from leftover sock yarn
Mini socks for a keychain cuz they are fun
Socks for creating a pattern for a contest
getting ready to cast on for a Baby Surprise Jacket for a friend's grandson

I currently have Rogue, Anouk, Cozy, and another shawl on my needles. :)

Your dogs are so cute - I've never seen that breed before!

What is on my needles? What isn't on my needles might be easier to do...
1) Mr. Greenjeans in Malabrigo
2) Serendipity socks from BMFA
3) Hanauma Bay socks in Lornas Laces
4) a pair of slippers for charity knitting in red Patons something or other.
There are others, but this is where my focus is right now. I'm also getting ready to start a Feb Lady Sweater in DIC Classy.

Wish me luck...

Hi-
I'm new to Ravelry and found your blog there. I love the pictures of your dogs!

What's on my needles? I've started the Ragna sweater out of Elsebeth Lavold's Viking Patterns For Knitting book. (lots of cables) I'm also going to be starting a pair of socks for a KAL.

Thanks!- B-girl on Ravelry

I'm mathmom on Ravelry. Right now on my needles I have 3 WIPs. The Avast sweater for my hubby, which I must finish by August for our trip to Alaska. Also a market bag I'm going to finish this week. Some slippers that are actually not on the needles any more... I just have to do the finishing. And I think I'm casting on some socks today or tomorrow...

May you receive much good karma from your yarn giveaway! Loved the photos of your beautiful dogs, and loved even more that you were wise enough to note that they are not good candidates for house pets.

Currently on the needles: the second sock of my second-ever pair of socks, and a saddle-shoulder pullover with lots of lovely cabling on the sleeves.

What's on my needles is way to much to list here. In the last week I've worked on my Icarus Shawl and a pair of socks I'm designing. I also finished a pair of socks.

thanks for all the contests and the great photos of farm life.

I love the pics of your dogs! I've never heard of that breed before, so thanks for teaching me something new.
On my needles is a fruit cap- eggplant/grape colors.

I really enjoy reading your blog. Great giveaway! I can relate to the puppy thing. A stray beagle found her way to our house and she was pregnant. It was a neat experience for our family.
One the needles --baby cardigan and socks.

Oooh, pretty. I am knitting Seascape from the Summer Knitty as a thank-you to my daughter's teacher. I'd love the red particularly to do a scarf for this year's Red Scarf Project. I saw your link on ravelry (I am Whatladder there, too.)

Hi there! Love your puppy pictures!

Hm. What's on my needles? I think the more appropriate question would be - what isn't on my needles... but anyway here goes:
1. Long overdue cotton socks for my brother - attempt #3.
2. Wedding shawl for my Auntie-to-be. Due Aug 2 - not a prayer of getting it done by then.
3. Baby washcloths for the ever-pregnant women among my friends. Seriously - there is something in the water.
4. A wedding afghan that might be done by their 1st anniversary in November.
5. A scarf that was due in December '07.
*sigh* I'm going to stop now. 5 is enough to put out there. I don't think anyone will ever know how many projects I truly have going on at once. Shoot, I don't think even I know.

I wouldn't mind some alpaca... on my needles right now is a Razor Cami, a pair of socks from Crystal Palace Panda Cotton, the Bamboozelle basket from Knitty, and a Big Bad Baby Blanket... I am not a monogamous knitter. :)

Dear Susan,
Found your site through a link on Ravelry. I admit I am blown away by your industry, humour and brilliant website. Your photos are fantastic and inspire me to actually 'take the plunge' with the smallholding we recently purchased in Shropshire. My husband and I have been dallying with the idea of what to do with the pastures and your 'walking woollies' are very tempting. (Don't worry, I know behind each 'kodak moment' lurks many, many hours of blood, sweat and tears!)

Along with the smallholding I've inherited two spinning wheels (with acoutrements) and a big loom. (The loom lives in the stable right now; it won't fit through the doors to the house.) So, I re-taught myself to knit (haven't held needles since I was in Brownies) and will soon be ready for the next stage in my fibre arts challenge.

On my needles tonight are: 1 vest in shetland chunky; 1 market bag in rowan handknit cotton; 1 man's sock in regia silk.

By the way, your dogs are beautiful! We have two golden retrievers, each weighing in at about 85 pounds.

I shall continue to watch your site and read your blog. Best of luck to you and yours!

Susan

Thanks for the AQ's! I love finding out about all the stuff you guys do. Now I have major camera envy!
On the needles:
Clapotis (Knitty), Quant (also Knitty), a scarf with Colinette Tao and Parisienne, feather and fan scarf out of Jitterbug. I may have other things, too, but I can't remember. :)

On my needles right now, a sweater for me(wool/alpaca blend), and always socks(right now for dh and me)

Hi, this is my first ever blog comment! I think it's wonderful that you're giving yarn away. You're what gives knitters a good name :) Thank you!

On the needles I have: Liesel scarf in bamboo/wool, Afghan square in wool, Pair of socks for my mom Online Supersock, Dragon Scales shawl in Fly Dyed fingering (Deep Ocean), and Rivulet Scarf in a cashmere blend. Five things...I think that's right. Good heavens I hope it's right :)

I'm knitting my first "vanilla" pattern socks of the Summer of Socks 2008 knit-along. Actually, they have red, white, and blue in them, and resemble a "ragg" pattern with red stripes.

I've got a glove on one set of needles, and a sock on another. (I've probably got a few other things stowed away, but those are what I'm working on now.)

Ok, I came by the blog from Ravelry to enter the contest, and am now completely jealous of your sheep farm! : )

Right now I'm working on a swatch for an upcoming design, and a KAL with my Seester (the Lace Nightie by Carrie Bostick Hoge).

If I win, you can E-mail me at SarahLoisATmsnDOTcom. Thanks for sharing!

On the needles right now? Beautiful Vero Tweed yarn to make an entrelac headband. First entrelac attempt! Love the pattern, not too keen on the effort needed. Thank goodness it's a headband and not a scarf!

Anonymous said...

Holy hell, that's a lot of people entering this.. I feel kinda sorry for you. I have pretty much NO CHANCE, but hey, I'm usually a lurker and this seems like fun and you can never get too much yarn, so I may as well come out of my shell. ( haha, I rhyme )

At the moment, there's a sleeve of a shrug on my needles but its a boring pattern although the result looks great, so I'll probably throw it down somewhere and finish a year later. Next to be on my needles will probably Endpaper Mitts or some kind of vest. I have no idea.

Hello - I did think that my blog had posted alright, but after reading how others were having problems I decided to check and see if mine actually worked, and sadly I don't see it on here... I did comment on the ravelry link (as tolebytobielynn) that I was so distracted by the beautiful dogs and learning about the breed (had never heard of it before) that I actually had to come back later and try my hand at the yarn give-away... hopefully this works, I have a bag on my needles now, my first pair of socks, and I am also thinking of completing a shawl. I wanted to enter as I have never worked with homespun or alpaca and thought this may be my chance! Thanks for the opportunity, and best of luck to everyone!

I am knitting the everyday capelet to go with a pretty capped sleeve blouse in drk. teal. I have a pair of socks on the needles for my teen daughter in lavendar and am doing a "hug" shawl for my sister who is going through a hard time.
I would like to be considered for the drawing and do something in alpaca tooo!

On the needles I have a log cabin blanket for my (injured) dog, a hat with my first hand-spun, a Pear-Apple cozy for my son's teacher and a matching water bottle carrier (both must be finished tonight) and a cotton shopping bag. I guess that is actually it. If I only had some Alpaca I could cast on an entrelac blanket for a baby to be born in Ireland this winter.

Thanks for running a contest! I am currently working on Urth. It was flying by at first but now that I'm almost finished, it couldn't be slower :(

On my needles right now is the second square of what will be a lace afghan for a lace class. I also have a Debbie Bliss baby cardigan with intarsia roses -- and lots of ends to weave in -- in the works. I have two sweaters -- a Debbie Bliss cabled cardigan for me and a mistake rib pattern cardigan for my fiance -- that are off the needles, but not finished yet.

Would definitely be put to good use here! I have been knitting like crazy in ravelry's great hat race - knitting race for charity where each round gets harder and timelines get shorter. I'm working on the hat for the sixth round right now, and am almost done. After that, a market bag that I am designing.

I'm so excited that this deadline has been extended. I just got home from vacation and was catching up on Ravelry when I saw your latest giveaway.

Your dogs are adorable!

I've got socks that I'm finishing up tonight. I've got a square for the Great American Quilt going, my first sweater (Flutter Sleeve Cardigan from Interweave Spring 2008), and a prayer shawl for our local children's hospital.

I can't be content with only one project at a time. I need to have different options to fit my moods and time spans for knitting.

Hi Susan,
I'm late to the party here, but I've got LOTS of things on my needles. A lace vest for myself, 2 different Snuggles (little rectangular mats/blankies that I donate to animal shelters), a mohair shawl, 2 or 3 EZ projects in various stages of completion (or not), and some spinning, too!
