The Weight of Water

Without a doubt, getting water to the flock in the winter is the single hardest job on our farm. It's not so bad when it's just below freezing, but when there are 11 inches of snow on the ground, it's a task we all dread. Normally we can just back the truck up to each pasture and fill the water troughs from the tanks in the back, but the snow makes the farm road way to risky. Our only other option is to empty the tanks into buckets and slog them down to each pen.

For me though, seeing this makes it all worth it. Kind of.

You know, I always thought trudging hot water out to my mom's horse in 15-30 trips carrying 2-4 gallon jugs was bad, but this is worse. But I got some sympathy for you, girl. Whoa, I just broke into a Beck song. Sorry.

You guys are my heroes. Just think in the spring when the babies arrive all this will be SO worth it.

I walked that little walk down to the boys. Hats off to you guys. Seriously. I had a hard enough time just holding my camera.

What an appropriate post title! Kind of like walking in sand with something that heavy- a PITA. The mantra "One foot in front of the other" comes to mind. But when you get to those sweet looking faces waiting eagerly, it makes it well worth it- until the next time. Wash, rinse, repeat. Hang in there!

Ahh, sweet ! I am thinking 10 gallon red plastic gas cans (which can be screwed closed) on a big blue plastic toboggan....so much easier than having to carry buckets, etc. At midnight last night we were coming up with ways to get the generator from the back small barn to the front of the garage through 2 feet of new snow...luckily we decided to wait till morning and see if the power came back on before then!

Boy do I feel for you, hauling buckets full of water is never easy. I did learn that I could carry almost full buckets if I lined the buckets with empty trash bags first ( new unused ones of course ). you can fill the bucket as high as you want to and tie the bags, water will stay put and not spill out especially not down the sides of your legs brrrr.
